About Hachiya
Hachiya is the acorn-shaped astringent persimmon — mouth-puckeringly tannic when firm, but honey-sweet and jammy when fully ripe. It's the classic baking persimmon for cookies and breads.
Hachiya requires 200 chill hours — the number of hours between 32°F and 45°F during winter dormancy. Without enough chill, the tree may fail to flower properly or produce poor fruit.
⚠️ Common Challenges
Must be completely soft before eating (astringency is intense otherwise); fruit is fragile when ripe.
❌ Common Misconception
Will Hachiya produce more fruit in colder climates?
Not necessarily. Hachiya only needs 200 chill hours. Planting in very cold zones (6 or colder) risks winter damage without improving fruit production. The ideal zones are 7-10 where the tree gets enough chill without excessive cold stress.
